THE YEAR'S FIRST FIELD EVENT:
NIGHT FLY THIS SATURDAY

This Saturday night, come help us light up the skies above Apollo 11 Field.  It's the first field event of the New Year... the 2012 Numb Thumb Valley Flyers Night Fly... this coming Saturday, Feb 4.   Flying begins at dusk and lasts till 10PM.  (We have to leave the field no later than 10:30PM.)  Sam Gengo is the contest director for this event... and you can reach him at (310) 318-1049 with any questions.  It's FREE to fly (AMA membership is required). These night events are always great to fly in -- and just to watch!

Here's the Numb Thumb flyer!

ALSO ON APPROACH:
Sun Feb 19: Winter Fun Fly

Our second Apollo 11 Field event of the year follows two weeks after the Numb Thumb.   It's the Valley Flyers Winter Fun Fly and again there will be night flying until 10PM.   Flying starts at 9AM.   The event is free to Valley Flyers members and $10 for non-members (AMA membership required).  Sam Gengo is also the CD of this event.  A reminder that all Valley Flyers Fun Flys also include a swap meet (on the concrete picnic tables on either side of the snack stand).  There's always plenty of buying and selling... so come early and don't miss out!

Here's the Fun Fly flyer!

Fri Mar 16-Sun Mar 18:
SAE Aero Design West

The exciting SAE Aero Design West engineering challenge returns to Apollo 11 Field for the first of two years.  And this time the event is SOLD OUT -- with 65 teams from all over the world competing in three weightlifting classes:  micro, regular and advanced.   Here's a link to an SAE web page that lists the teams... and there are links on that page to much more information on this terrific competition.

The action Fri Mar 16 will be at the Airtel Plaza Hotel... where the students will have their aircraft tech inspected.  Also at the hotel on that Friday, each team delivers its oral report under the intense questioning of professional engineers.  Exhaustive written reports are also part of this competition.  When time allows, the teams will come to Apollo 11 Field on Friday for flight testing including - in many cases - first flights.    Competition flights take place all day Sat Mar 17 and half day Sun Mar 18... with multiple rounds in each class each day.   Winners in the three classes will receive their awards at the field early Sunday afternoon.

The SAE and Valley Flyers will be looking for strong volunteer participation in Aero Design West.   We'll need inspectors, pilots, and lots of people to work as stewards and other assignments at the field.  Participation in this event -- on any level -- is extremely gratifying. Sam Gengo is the CD for Valley Flyers, Chef Ricc Bieber will be organizing the massive job of feeding hundreds of hungry university students and I'll, once again, be announcing.   Lockheed-Martin is the main corporate sponsor.

Santa Monica Museum of Flying
Needs Our Help

Member Amir Blachman has sent this letter to Chuck Thompson.  It asks for the help of Valley Flyer modelers for a very worthy project.

Dear Chuck,

My name is Amir Blachman and I grew up on Woodley field, building and flying models from about 1981 to 1986.  I've recently begun volunteering as an an aviation model restorer at the New Santa Monica Museum of Flying.  We've got some super-special planes and models but we need more hands to help out now, so I'm turning to my Valley Flyer roots for help.

The Museum is opening mid-February and we really need some volunteers over the next 3 weeks (longer term opportunities exist as well).  I'd greatly appreciate your help in getting a few modelers and enthusiasts interested in helping out.

There is quite a bit of important aviation history in the collection (including the Douglas Flyer - first airplane to circle the earth) and it is an exciting privilege to work with the collection!

Please let me know if you have any questions, and you have my sincere appreciate for any volunteers you can send our way!

Regards,
Amir

Support Need To
Save Adult Education

Board Member Mario Sweet (who is also a member of the Friends of Van Nuys Airport) has asked that his information below regarding LAUSD Adult Schools be passed onto the membership:

The Friends of Van Nuys Airport has learned that CLOSURE of ALL Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) ADULT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS has been recommended by John Deasy, LAUSD Superintendent of Schools.  Mr. Deasy has made this unacceptable recommendation which will be voted on by the LAUSD Board in early February.   The Friends of Van Nuys Airport strongly believe Superintendent John  Deasy's recommendation for CLOSURE of ALL Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) ADULT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS in unacceptable to our community in every way.  The negative financial and educational  impacts which would result are intolerable.   Such closure would be an absolute disservice to our community.

Distribution of this information throughout our community is vital to the survival of LAUSD Adult Community Schools.  Your opinion directed to our elected officials including LAUSD Board Members is essential in diverting an unacceptable action CLOSURE of ALL Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) ADULT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS recommendation  of Superintendent John Deasy.

You can write to Superintendent Deasy at 333 South Beaudry Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90017.

There's more on this in a local TV news piece you can watch at this link.

Your assistance to our community is appreciated and commended. The North Valley Occupational Center;  the Van Nuys Airport's Aircraft Mechanic School and the LAUSD Adult Community Schools are vital to our Van Nuys Airport and community.
